Summary Guidelines for Cattle Movement

Summary Guidelines for Cattle Movement

From the desk of Erin Luley, VMD, MPH, DACVP
Assistant Director at the Bureau of Animal Health and Diagnostic Services

Dear PA veterinarians,

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has updated our Quarantine Order regarding movement restrictions and testing requirements for animals imported into Pennsylvania.  This replaces the Quarantine Order released on Apr. 5.

To summarize changes from the Apr. 5 Quarantine Order, PA now requires testing of lactating dairy cattle from all states in accordance with the Federal Order.  The timeframe for testing has been extended from 5 days to 7 days to mirror the Federal Order.  PA still requires testing of non-lactating cattle by nasal swabs for animals coming from affected states, but this is restricted to animals over 18 months of age and excludes animals moving directly to slaughter.  A summary document for all cattle movement requirements is attached.  More information can be found at Bureau of Animal Health and Diagnostic Services (BAHDS) (pa.gov)

PA Dept. of Ag will be hosting a webinar on Monday May 13 at 12 pm presented by Assistant State Veterinarian Erin Luley to discuss the updated Quarantine Order, as well as general updates on the HPAI situation in dairy cattle and Pennsylvania’s efforts to prevent introduction of this disease to our dairy herd.  This webinar is specifically for PA veterinarians and there will be an opportunity for Q&A.  Register here.

Please continue to report any suspicion of HPAI in dairy cattle or in poultry to the Department’s emergency hotline at 717-772-2852, option 1.  Thank you for your work to protect PA agriculture!

Thank you
