Topic: Osteoarthritis Management in Dogs and Cats

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common causes of chronic pain in dogs. It is estimated to affect up to 20% of dogs and cats. A study showed that almost all cats over 10 years of age have radiographic evidence of appendicular degenerative joint disease. And, greater than 50% of canine arthritis cases are diagnosed between 8-13 years. Although we cannot cure this progressive disease, we can relieve the pain and discomfort associated with it. As a result, we improve the quality of life in our patients and our clients. A two-step grading and staging system has been developed to allow for repeated monitoring of our canine patients. This staging and grading system is useful for guiding treatment and monitoring progression. The Canine Osteoarthritic Staging Tool (COAST) is an easy to use assessment tool for the veterinarian and pet owner. This presentation will cover the COAST system and medical management of osteoarthritis in our family pets.
