Legislative Advocacy & Action
PVMA represents Pennsylvania's veterinary profession in Harrisburg, lobbying on
issues related to animal welfare and animal health, veterinary practice, and
small business that impact the way your practice and the animals you serve. We
do this by monitoring issues, building rapport with legislators, legislative
staff, and key leaders, and educating them on the issues that they are making
decisions on everyday. We also host an annual Legislative Day which features an
opportunity for members to learn about the legislative process and what legislation is
currently being considered, and to meet with their legislators. The day
culminates with a Friends of Veterinary Medicine Reception for PVMA members,
legislators, and leaders of key agencies and stakeholder organizations.
Liaison
to Other Organizations
PVMA represents Pennsylvania's veterinarians in all we
do; initiating collaboration with other organizations and partnering
cooperatively with other stakeholders concerned with veterinary medicine, animal
health and welfare, and public health. We are proud of the collaborative
relationships we have nurtured with the State Board of Veterinary Medicine,
Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, agricultural and biomedical research
organizations, and humane societies. We have taken the lead on important issues
such as the plight of unwanted horses, welfare of dogs in commercial breeding
kennels, and the shortage of veterinarians in production animal and public
sector medicine.
Publications
The keystone veterinarian is our quarterly
magazine, keeping members informed on veterinary issues, upcoming events,
legislative and regulatory news, and what's going on in PVMA and with fellow
colleagues. Our Vet Bytes e-newsletter and our Just the Fax are sent out 1-2
times per month and our Member Alerts are sent out as urgent issues arise.
Client Complaint Resolution
The Ethics and Peer Review Committee oversee clients
complaints against PVMA member veterinarians, often resolving the complaint
before legal and licensure action is initiated.
Information Clearinghouse
PVMA
acts as an information clearinghouse for its members, saving them time and,
often, frustration. Members who have questions on most aspects of practice,
legal responsibilities of the profession, licensing requirements, etc., can
contact the PVMA office for help. Even if we don't know the answer immediately,
we are glad to research your question and point you in the right direction.
